The Peloton bike is an innovative fitness machine with engaging features, but I wasn’t always sure if wireless headphones can be used with a Peloton bike.
Wireless headphones are a big part of how I listen to all types of media including music, audiobooks, podcasts, and sports. Being able to use wireless headphones can make it much easier to ride my Peloton bike since I won’t have to worry about wires in my way.
You can use wireless headphones with a Peloton bike to listen to your instructor and the music in the class while you are working out. Your Peloton bike is enabled for Bluetooth connections, so you won’t have to buy any additional hardware or software to get connected.
Having the freedom to ride and move with limited restrictions is key to having a successful Peloton bike workout. Being comfortable allows me to focus more of my energy on the actual workout motions instead of senseless actions like swatting headphone cables away.
Regardless of how you normally workout on a cycle, you should be able to find a way to make things work with a Peloton bike. We’ll go over what you can and can’t listen to through the Peloton bike, then go over methods you can use to listen to almost anything.
Are Wired Or Wireless Headphones Better With A Peloton Bike?
A Peloton bike can give users the experience of being in a group class while being at home.
You can actually be in the middle of the woods and use a Peloton bike if you have a good internet connection.
While being in a group class usually means you’re listening to the in-person instruction and the music playing in the background, being in a remote group class might require you to wear headphones to keep the noise down so it doesn’t bother others.
I feel that listening in on classes with headphones lets me hear the instructor better, even when I’m alone at home with loud speakers at my disposal.
When it comes to picking headphones that work the best for me on a Peloton bike, I tend to go for wireless headphones that have a snug fit.
Of course, the sound quality and latency characteristics of headphones play a huge part of how good I think they are, but the physical design and comfort are more of a factor when I’m on a Peloton bike.
I don’t need the sound quality to be all that great when I’m on a Peloton bike compared to if I’m in my room or a restaurant sitting down.
I mainly just need to hear the instructor well enough to follow their instructions.
Though it’s an added bonus to hear music in the background, I’m usually satisfied as long as I can hear the general beat of the songs.
For personal preference adjustments, I’m glad Peloton offers Peloton bike users the ability to adjust the audio levels of the instructor and the class music.
Getting back to the physical aspects of headphones, though I like the audio stability of wired headphones, the comfort and freedom of wired headphones outweigh the benefits of wired headphones.
Wired headphones are often cheaper than wireless headphones when comparing comparable models, but the wireless versions will usually be better for Peloton bikes since they allow you to ride more freely.
If you are the type of person that moves around a great deal when they ride a Peloton bike, headphone cables can get tangled on your arms or other areas of your body.
Sometimes I like to lean further back when I ride, which could make a headphone cable stretch too far and possibly unplug from the audio output port.
Before choosing the type of connection you want for your headphones, you should consider your personal riding style and comfort preferences.
Though having wireless headphones usually works best for me and many others, the benefits of wired headphones might mean more to you.
How Do I Use Wireless Headphones With A Peloton Bike?
There are many wireless technologies available today that can connect two electronic devices such as headphones, speakers, phones, televisions, and keyboards.
Though some wireless devices can be connected with Wi-Fi, many are often connected through a technology called Bluetooth.
Peloton bike owners will be able to connect headphones with Bluetooth technology that is already included with the Peloton bike.
If you have wireless headphones that can connect via Bluetooth, you can connect your headphones to a Peloton bike by doing the following:
- Turn your headphones on and put them into pairing mode.
- Open the menu on the screen of your Peloton, which should be at the bottom of the screen.
- Go to the Bluetooth settings.
- Set the Bluetooth settings to the On position and allow your Peloton bike to automatically find and connect to your wireless headphones.
You should refer to instructions related to your specific headphones to resolve possible connection issues.
If the instructions included with your headphones do not contain a solution for connection issues, you should contact the manufacturer for further information or to request a product exchange, repair, or refund.
What Are Alternate Ways To Use Wireless Headphones With A Peloton Bike?
The standard way to use wired or wireless headphones with a Peloton bike is to connect them to listen to your instructor and the music in the class.
Though that is a great way to take in a class since participants often experience that way through in-person classes in a fitness center, some Peloton bike users might want to listen to other content while using their bike.
Unfortunately, the native Peloton bike platform will not allow users to listen to their own music by connecting their musical library via physical devices, online storage, websites, or any external sources.
There may be workarounds you can perform to technically make it work, but Peloton does not appear to authorize any methods for streaming external audio through their system.
If you’d like to listen to your own audio such as music, podcasts, audiobooks, or live sports commentary, you can do so through a separate phone app you can place on or near your Peloton bike.
A method I employ to listen to the Peloton class instructor and my own music or other audio content is put one side of headphones connected to the class in one ear, and the other side connected to my own music in my other ear.
If using that method is discombobulating or uncomfortable in some way, you might prefer playing your music or other audio through your headphones and having the class audio played through standard speakers.
I will often use the headphones and speakers method one way or another.
In other words, I’ll play the class audio in my headphones sometimes and do the opposite at other times.
A somewhat odd method that could work if you have the right equipment is to connect in-ear headphones to your class or music library and connect over-ear headphones to a different audio source.
You could then wear the in-ear headphones with the over-ear headphones placed over them.
It might seem like a clunky and uncomfortable way to listen to multiple audio sources, but it might work well if your audio gear is streamlined and doesn’t conflict with each other over the Bluetooth frequency.
